In a move aimed at bridging the gap between academic learning and industry practice, Honoris students recently embarked on a transformative company visit to Plastinax, one of Mauritius’ most established manufacturers of sustainable eyewear. Established in 1976, Plastinax has remained at the forefront of eyewear production for nearly five decades, showcasing the potential of local talent on the global stage.
The visit, which took students behind the scenes of Plastinax’s operations, was designed to give them a comprehensive understanding of how global products are created, managed, and distributed from a local facility. Students were given the rare opportunity to see how sustainable practices are integrated into the production process, reinforcing the relevance of sustainability in the modern business landscape.
Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice
The students had the chance to witness every stage of the production journey, from initial design and material selection to the final quality control checks before products are shipped globally. This immersive experience allowed students to see firsthand how sustainable practices are applied in manufacturing, and how these practices benefit the environment and improve the bottom line.
“This visit helped us understand how the theory we study connects with the real world,” said one of the participating students. “Seeing the whole process in action was eye-opening.”
A Unique Opportunity for Working Adults
The visit to Plastinax wasn’t just another field trip. It was part of Honoris’s commitment to providing working adult students – many of whom are balancing jobs, family, and studies – with the same valuable industry exposure typically reserved for full-time students. In a world where many educational experiences are still confined to the classroom, Honoris believes in extending learning beyond the screen and into the places where actual work happens.
“Our students may be online distane learners, but that doesn’t mean they should miss out on real-world exposure,” said Tasneem Jaumally, Managing Director at Honoris. “By bringing them to places like Plastinax, we ensure they have the opportunity to connect their studies with the industries they’ll eventually work in.”
Plastinax: A Model of Local Innovation
The company visit also served as an important lesson in local innovation. Plastinax’s ability to compete in the global market while maintaining operations in Mauritius underscores the potential of local businesses to thrive internationally. Students saw how the company’s focus on sustainable materials – including the use of recycled plastics in its eyewear – aligns with global trends and demonstrates the value of forward-thinking, locally driven enterprises.
Plastinax’s commitment to sustainability was a major takeaway for students, many of whom are now more conscious of how businesses can balance profitability with environmental responsibility.
Fostering Ambition and Career Growth
The visit not only provided valuable knowledge about the industry but also sparked a deeper sense of ambition among students. Observing professionals in action and engaging with company leaders helped students gain insight into potential career paths and inspired them to aim higher in their own professional journeys.
Thank You to Plastinax
Honoris would like to extend its gratitude to Brian Arnasala and the entire Plastinax team for hosting the students and sharing their expertise. The visit was an incredible opportunity for students to engage directly with industry professionals, ask questions, and gain hands-on experience.
